Charlie Kaufman doing rewrites on Kung Fu Panda sequel

Here’s something we never thought we’d be reporting: Charlie Kaufman—the man behind Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Synecdoche New York, and Adaptation—is currently doing a script polish on Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom Of Doom. As The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog points out, animated movies tend to bring in numerous screenwriters to do punch-up work, so it’s not like Kaboom can be characterized as a “Kaufman project,” exactly. But it will be interesting to see whether Kaufman’s contribution is evident in the finished cartoon, perhaps with some surreal, self-referential sequence in which Jack Black’s panda ponders the slippery nature of identity and whether his existence as a “kung-fu” panda is all a delusion created to help him cope with his own imminent extinction.
