Chart the rise and fall of Tower Records with All Things Must Pass
If you’re a music fan in America between the ages of, say, 25 to super-old, chances are you spent some quality time in a Tower Records. The music retail giant was a rare bright spot among the corporate chains that normally sucked the fun of shopping for music (whither the joy, Sam Goody?), and browsing the endless rows made for a great experience that could last an entire afternoon, depending on your tolerance for flipping through CDs and vinyl. The new documentary All Things Must Pass goes in-depth about the rise and fall of the music superstore, gathering famous names (Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John) to talk about the company alongside the people who founded it. “I don’t really understand why it’s gone,” Grohl says in this trailer, though the shots of kids scrolling through early versions of Napster suggests the film knows exactly why. Early reviews have been strong, so this might be a must-see for music nerds. It debuts theatrically on October 15.
