Remember last year’s Golden Globes, when Natalie Portman presented the Best Director category and made a point to acknowledge the fact that all of the nominees were men? We’re not bringing that up for any specific reason, we just think it’s fun to reminisce about badass awards show moments. Anyway, the Directors Guild Of America recently announced the nominees for the film portion of its annual awards, the DGAs, and they all happen to have a surprising thing in common (we’ll let you try to figure out what it is, though). The big favorite seems to be Bradley Cooper, since he’s nominated in every single category for his work on A Star Is Born, but there are only two categories in the film section—Best Director and Best First-Time Director—so it’s not hugely shocking.
Joining Cooper in the overall category are Alfonso Cuarón, Spike Lee, Adam McKay, and inexplicable award season champion Peter Farrelly, with Bo Burnham, Carlos Lopez Estrada, Matthew Heineman and Boots Riley joining Cooper in the first-timers section. Also, in case you couldn’t solve the riddle, all of these men happen to be… well, men, but the TV nominees—announced earlier this week—are little more diverse. In the drama category, we have Jason Bateman, Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long, some guy you may remember from earlier in this story named Adam McKay, and Daina Reid, with the comedy category featuring Donald Glover, Bill Hader, Hiro Murai, Daniel Palladino, and Amy Sherman-Palladino.
The full list of DGA nominees is below, with the winners set to be announced on February 2.
