Chelsea Handler to host the MTV Video Music Awards

The upcoming MTV Video Music Awards has been making a lot of effort to get your attention lately—promising at least 13 separate costume changes for Lady Gaga; hinting that Kanye West may do something stupid again—but as well know, the success of the show lives or dies by its host, which is an absolutely false statement, but just go with us for a second. Not surprisingly, MTV is making a rather blatant appeal to the younger demographics by booking ultra-trendy talk-show host Chelsea Handler, whose memoir Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea has become nothing short of a counterculture sensation, passed among neo-beatniks like a latter-day How To Talk Dirty And Influence People. Also, she really has it in for Lindsay Lohan! (Asked why MTV didn’t just hire cast members from Jersey Shore to host by the New York Times, who was probably just joking, general manager Stephen Friedman said, “They’re busy in Seaside” shooting a third season, and that “we want to let them do what they do best.”) In a statement, Handler acknowledged, “It’s an MTV audience, so I’m sure some people won’t know who I am. But by the end of the show, I won’t know who anybody is, just like I don’t now.” Then she made a joke about dating Justin Bieber. Can she say that?
