Chelsea Manning is free and on Instagram

After spending seven years in prison for exposing proof that the U.S. military had—among other things—indiscriminately killed Iraqi civilians, Chelsea Manning was finally freed this week after President Obama commuted her sentence on one of his last days in office. If you’re interested in learning more about her story, including the brutal, inhumane, and torturous conditions she faced while in prison, The Intercept has put together a lengthy and thoughtful account of her story and the many awful things she went through to get to where she is today. Basically, though, Manning is an American hero who has faced undue suffering because she’s an honest person who couldn’t sit idly by while her country was complicit in death and corruption.

That’s all in the past now, though, and Manning is now free to enjoy her freedom. Naturally, being an American in 2017, that meant that one of the first things she did was hop on Instagram and share a photo of some pizza:

Manning’s whole Instagram account only has a few photos at this point, but they’re all delightfully normal. After so many years of bullshit, that’s the least of what she deserves. Here she is wearing some rad All Stars:

And, finally, a celebratory toast “to freedom and a new beginning.”
