“Chewbacca Mom” Candace Payne is getting two TLC web series
Because apparently America learned nothing from the rise and fall of Ken Bone, “Chewbacca mom” Candace Payne is extending her viral fame with two new online shows on TLC’s digital offshoot. Payne came into the public eye when her jubilant Facebook Live review of a talking Chewbacca mask went insanely viral. She’s been heaped with praise and prizes ever since—including an offer of full college tuition for her kids—and her latest project sees her join forces with the “TLCme” brand, which is “TLC’s digital destination.”
As Payne explains in her TLCme promo video, both shows are centered on the idea of Payne interacting with her fans online. In 2 Truths & A Lie With Candace she’ll tell three elaborate stories, and then invite fans to guess which one is a lie in the Facebook comments. Payne will then stream a Facebook Live video the next day to reveal the fake story. Meanwhile in Sing-A-Long With Candace, she’ll perform original songs with lyrics that are “crowdsourced by her fans on social.” For what it’s worth, Payne actually does have quite a lovely singing voice, so that second concept isn’t totally coming out of nowhere.
It remains to be seen whether or not this extended stardom will help or hurt Payne in the long run, as public opinion is fairly divided when it comes to her increased time in the spotlight. But for her part, Payne seems thrilled by the whole thing. “Y’all, TLC!” she exclaims in her promo. “Who’d have ever thought, right?
