Chic Amy Adams faces her unglamorous past in Nocturnal Animals trailer
After an all-too-brief tease yesterday, Focus Features released a full trailer for Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals. It’s full of gorgeous, eerie imagery, fabulous eye-makeup, and meta-storytelling. The film follows Amy Adams’ glamorous Susan as she reads a manuscript from her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal). As you can see here, it then moves back and forth between Susan’s LA art world and the desolate, threatening, but still gorgeous West Texas of the novel. (To make the proceedings even more complicated, there are flashbacks too. Hi, Laura Linney!) Gyllenhaal plays both Susan’s ex and the protagonist of the book.
Nocturnal Animals—which previously played the Venice Film Festival—recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was met with some raves and a dose of controversy, given criticism of its opening sequence, which features overweight women dancing nude. (A taste of that—revealed in the movie to be part of a gallery exhibition—appears at 1:45 in the trailer.) In an interview with Vulture, Ford said they are “the Valkyrie in a sense, casting a spell on the entire film.”
Nocturnal Animals is due out in theaters November 18.
