Rhymefest—a.k.a Che Smith—is a Chicago-based rapper who recently won a Grammy and an Academy Award for his work on Common and John Legend’s “Glory,” but the Chicago Police Department apparently didn’t care who he was when he recently tried to report a robbery. As Smith tells it, he was sitting his car on Saturday morning when a man jumped in, put a gun to his head, and demanded his wallet. He then went to a nearby police station, but when the officer at the front desk wasn’t taking him seriously, he took out his phone and began filming. Rhymefest posted that video on Twitter:
He keeps trying to tell his story, the officers keep telling him to put the camera away, and he eventually does once it seems like they’re actually going to listen to him. Now, Chicago Police Department spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi has apologized to Rhymefest on Twitter, noting that they “will be addressing this today.”
According to CNN, Rhymefest has now gotten a call of Chicago Police Chief Of Patrol Fred Waller, who also apologized and explained that the Police Superintendent is going to “address the incident with officers in the district.”
Rhymefest—who says he had $3 in the stolen wallet—even tweeted at the guy who robbed him:
As far as we know, that guy has not apologized.
