Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala to rule as headliners over this year's Coachella
Annual music festival/Illuminati recruiting ground Coachella released its 2019 schedule this evening, revealing the new kings and queens of this particular brand of festival-friendly American music scene: Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande, the latter now poised to conquer pretty much all of Western musical culture for at least the next six months.
Gambino had a pretty great 2018, releasing the challenging, upsetting, irresistible “This Is America,” and guesting on SNL (alongside his non-musical alter ego, Donald Glover, as host). Australian rockers Tame Impala rolled into their spot as go-to festival headliners with a trippy, “immaculate” performance at Pitchfork 2018. But it was Grande who grabbed that hottest heat, capturing the zeitgeist, then using it to smash records with her reference-heavy video for “Thank U, Next.”
Other big names performing at this year’s festival, which will hit Indio on Friday, April 12, and stretch across that weekend, and the next: Janelle Monáe, The 1975, Kid Cudi, Aphex Twin, Weezer, CHVRCHES, Pusha T, plus many more. Passes for the festival go on sale this Friday at 11 a.m. Pacific.
