Ending a tense, uncertain period in which it seemed as though China might be a nation where artistic freedom is quashed by ruthlessly dogmatic censorship, the republic has approved a second theatrical run for Django Unchained, after pulling the film minutes into its would-be premiere. The return to theaters—and, presumably, the beginning of a new era of China being totally cool with whatever—will begin on May 7, with the new edit of the film reportedly featuring some excised nudity, but still plenty of the violent acts against non-Chinese people that the country so enthusiastically embraces. “There is tremendous excitement, anticipation and awareness for the film and we thank the local authorities for quickly resolving this issue,” Sony said in a statement, of the excitedly anticipated film that most of China became well aware of when they illegally downloaded it weeks ago.
