Chloe Bennet says Marvel doesn’t care enough about its Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe technically encompasses its TV counterparts, but the properties have so far been discrete entities. MCU insiders have previously indicated that it’s just too difficult to wrangle all the capes (well, Thor’s, anyway) and egos. There’s the matter of nabbing the rights to include the various characters, as well as finding a way to have them meet organically. And as Marvel boss Kevin Feige tells io9, movie components have to be worked out so far in advance that tying their plots into any small-screen properties might just create a storytelling obligation.
But that doesn’t really explain the lack of a proper crossover between the MCU and Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which prominently features a character from the films. There’s also the fact that Disney owns both ABC and Marvel Entertainment, so you’d think they’d just be looking at this as a matter of corporate synergy. Not so, says Chloe Bennet, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own Daisy Johnson on the show. Bennet spoke out about the gulf between the properties over the weekend at Wizard World Des Moines. When asked why a crossover hadn’t happened yet, Bennet first responded with exasperation:
I don’t know. People who make movies for Marvel, why don’t you acknowledge what happens on our show? Why don’t you guys go ask them that? Cause they don’t seem to care!
The actress then went on to say despite all of its protestations to the contrary, the MCU doesn’t seem at all eager to acknowledge its smaller-screen doings. But Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. did get an early renewal from ABC this spring, which gives Marvel Entertainment a chance to get its act together.
