Chris Carter says The X-Files will be back, “almost without a doubt”

First, the folks at Fox said there are probably more X-Files episodes out there. Now X-Files creator Chris Carter has said in an interview with the New York Times that there are definitely more episodes out there. “I can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back,” Carter said. Again, that’s not all that surprising considering all the hints that have been dropped along the way suggesting this six-episode run of the series wasn’t really the end. And despite the ominous “This Is The End” title card that prefaced last night’s “My Struggle II,” the episode was promoted as a season finale, not a series finale. Plus, it ended with a pretty major cliffhanger. Plus, it wasn’t very good, so if The X-Files wants to stick the landing for real, there will have to be more.

And let’s be real, Carter doesn’t really have much else going on, and he seems eager to jump at the opportunity to make more. He wrote a third movie for funsies, basically. And while it seems unlikely that that will ever see the light of day, Carter does sound very confident about the show returning “Home Again” (again) on Fox. He told the New York Times that he has already had an informal conversation with Fox Television Group co-chief executive Dana Walden, also one of the Fox execs to hint at more episodes earlier this year, about it. According to Carter, “the question is when. There’s an appetite for it and I think everyone is excited about doing more. It’s just how to get it done.”

But don’t hold your breath for your next X-Files fix, as Carter said there will be no official announcements made in the near future. Much like the mythology of The X-Files, “it’s complicated,” especially since Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are very busy people. “It’s really a matter of when the actors would be able to do it, when they’re available at the same time,” Carter said. “We’d also need a schedule that would give us enough lead time to make it interesting. Nothing’s been written yet. I’ve written down a lot of ideas but there’s nothing even close to a script.”

Carter agreed that The X-Files is his life’s work. “If I come back for the next series, I will have spent four decades of my life on it,” he said. It’s his alien baby, and he’ll hold onto it for as long as he can.
