Chris Cooper to play J.D. Salinger in coming-of-age movie

Reclusive author J.D. Salinger has only grown more reclusive in the last few years—mostly due to his death in 2010—but now first-time film director Jim Sadwith will be making a movie about him and the profound effect that his novel The Catcher In The Rye has on angst-ridden teens who have yet to realize how much of a cliché they are. Come on, teens. Get your shit together.

This comes from Deadline, which reports that Chris Cooper will be playing Salinger in Coming Through The Rye, a coming-of-age story about a coming-of-age story that even has the word “coming” in the title. The plot will be based on Sadwith’s own childhood “quest” to meet the famous author, and it focuses on “a sensitive boy” and “a quirky girl” who head out on a roadtrip to find Salinger and, we assume, tell him how much The Catcher In The Rye totally speaks to them because they’re first teens to ever have feelings about stuff—and also they really hate phonies. Along the way, Deadline says that Sensitive Boy and Quirky Girl will discover “friendship and the truth about themselves,” which is the sort of thing that tends to happen in coming-of-age stories.
