Chris Hemsworth heads Down Under Cover for his new buddy comedy with Tiffany Haddish
Of all the Avengers, specifically the Avenger Chrises, Chris Hemsworth also appears to be ready to launch into stratosphere star status.. The guy billed as a “no-name” when first cast as Thor has a number of post-Endgame projects lined up, like the anticipated Asgardian re-teaming in Men In Black: International with Valkyrie Tessa Thompson. Along that buddy comedy theme (our film critic A.A. Dowd maintains that Thor: Ragnarok is actually multiple buddy comedies), Hemsworth’s latest career announcement involves a pairing with also-on-a-hot-streak Tiffany Haddish in the upcoming Down Under Cover.
Deadline announces that the movie will be “a two-hander buddy cop action comedy that is being mounted in the spirit of films like 48 Hours, Rush Hour and The Heat” and is predicted to be introduced at Cannes. Deadline goes on to describe the plot: “Hemsworth will play a detective who goes undercover to crack a series of baffling casino heists in which the prime suspects are a troupe of Australian male erotic dancers—we guess that the odds are extremely high that part of his undercover role will involve him doing an erotic dance himself. Alas, Hemsworth’s detective is also “forced to take the partner no one else will— Haddish’s character, a lone wolf who does things only one way: hers,” in the spirit of lone wolf/buddy-cop comedies hearkening back to the days of Lethal Weapon.
Hemsworth’s turns in Ghostbusters and Ragnarok (and accompanying videos) proved that he has surprisingly effective comedic chops, so he should be able to hold his own against the formidably hilarious Haddish. She has recently lent her voice talents to productions like the new Netflix series Tuca & Bertie, as well as the sequels for The Lego Movie and The Secret Life Of Pets. She’s also teamed up with Kevin Hart in the movie Night School and with Tracy Morgan in the series The Last O.G. Those looking to peruse Hemsworth’s more dramatic side can also look forward to the upcoming Dhaka, a drama written by his Avengers buddy Joe Russo.
