Christopher Nolan will “never say never” to directing superheroes again

Christopher Nolan, whose The Dark Knight trilogy is at least partially responsible for the current boom in superhero films, says he won’t rule out returning to the genre someday. He told Time Out, “I don’t see it as a limited genre. … I think like any genre, like the Western, it has limitless opportunities.” He then added coyly, “Never say never,” which will surely send comic book fans scrambling to find a Batman story with that line because, as we all know, Nolan speaks only in code.

The acclaimed writer-director admits that his Batman films likely helped encourage the current onslaught of superhero movies, and noted, “You don’t want Hollywood to hit [a] saturation point with those things.” Considering that Nolan is an executive producer on Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice—which aims to bring at least Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and maybe even a female Robin into the same movie—that’s apparently a minor concern.
