Yes, Chumbawamba is still a band—or, rather, it was until just recently, when the group’s members agreed to go their separate ways. Chumbawamba’s career spanned over three decades of anarcho-punk musical ramblings, though it was forever marked by one, huge anomaly of a hit: 1997’s “Tubthumping.” Pour out a little of lager, whiskey, vodka, and cider drink accordingly.
In a statement on its website, the band said the reason for the breakup is because the “writing, recording, touring cycle… wasn’t doing justice to what Chumbawamba set out to do it in the first place,” which is convey ideas more than music. The band says after 30-odd years together, it just couldn’t keep up with the “time and energy” needed to remain “relevant and active and up-to-date.” Stereogum aptly notes that this is “the rare case where a band can claim that they’ve done everything they could do as a band and be absolutely truthful about it.” In other words, they repeatedly got knocked down, but they got up again—until now, at least.
