Cool synth-pop band Chvrches recently collaborated with DJ Marshmello (the guy who did a concert in Fortnite and got mad when KFC did an EDM gag at a festival) on a track called “Here With Me,” granting Chvrches its first appearance on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and the band’s first time topping the Dance/Electronic Digital Song sales chart. Apparently Marshmello isn’t particularly picky with his collaborators, though, because he’s following that up with “Light It Up,” a new track featuring abusive piece of shit Chris Brown. It’s the kind of gross and depressing bullshit that is far too common in the entertainment business, with pretty much everyone willing to forgive Chris Brown for assaulting Rihanna in 2009 (and everything he’s both done and been accused of since) as long as he continues to put out hit records. He fucking sucks, and everyone who agrees to work with him in any capacity also sucks.

Unfortunately, given their recent work with Marshmello and the continued presence of “Here With Me” on the charts, this also reflects poorly on Chvrches, which apparently didn’t double-check the DJ’s moral compass before agreeing to work with him. However, as previously noted, Chvrches is cool, and the band put out a statement today saying its members are “upset, confused, and disappointed” by Marshmello’s decision to work with Chris Brown, and noting that working with him “enables, excuses, and ultimately tacitly endorses that behavior.”

We would argue that even throwing “tacitly” in that comment is being very generous to Marshmello, but whatever. This comes from Pitchfork, which notes that the new track also features work from Tyga, who put out a song in 2015 that alluded to having sex with then-girlfriend Kylie Jenner even though she was underage at the time, and in 2016 he was accused of making a 14-year-old girl “uncomfortable” when he asked her to meet him in-person after talking on Instagram.
