Ciarán Hinds says he’s playing a world-weary supervillain in Justice League

In the first full Justice League trailer—amid all the blaring guitars, mood lighting, and gruff Batman quips—we don’t get many specifics about the threat the heroes are going up against. However, in a new interview with The Independent, Ciarán Hinds shared some details regarding bad guy Steppenwolf, the Darkseid henchman he’s tasked with playing. “He’s old, tired, still trying to get out of his own enslavement to Darkseid, [but] he has to keep on this line to try and take over worlds,” Hinds said. Zack Snyder loves nothing more than a superhero—or villain—going through an existential crisis. So the man who gave us a world-weary Batman will now add a world-weary Steppenwolf to his repertoire.

Hinds also explained that he’s giving a motion-capture performance for the movie, noting: “Basically they’re going to construct something, digitally, and then they will use my eyes and mouth.” But expect his eyes and mouth to convey emotional turmoil.
