Cinepocalypse launches its first vinyl release, plots its return to Chicago in June 2019
Chicago’s homegrown genre-film festival Cinepocalypse is plotting its return to the Music Box Theatre, exclusively announcing through The A.V. Club its dates for 2019. Mark your calendars, weirdos: The festival is back for its third year next June, Thursday June 13 through Thursday, June 20. The programming team—which, full disclosure, includes this writer—is already being assembled, and we’ll have the first wave of more than 50 title announcements for you in April.
And that’s just the half of it. Cinepocalypse has also partnered with Creep Records for its first-ever vinyl releases: The soundtrack and score to Jenn Wexler’s The Ranger, an official selection of last year’s Cinepocalypse. The punk slasher’s soundtrack is, obviously, heavy on classic punk rock, including tracks from FANG, The Avengers, The Grim, and Dayglo Abortions; the synth-heavy score comes courtesy of Wade McNeil and Andrew Gordon Macpherson. Both records will be out next year with gatefold jackets, colored vinyl, and all that fun stuff collectors go nuts for, along with CD and cassette releases perfect for blasting in your shitty van.
Of the release, Wexler says,“We always wanted the music of The Ranger to feel like a mixtape, so we’re thrilled people will soon be able to experience it not only on actual cassette, but also a limited-edition vinyl … From punk to parkland, the music captures the spirit of the film, so there’s nothing cooler than being able to showcase the songs and score.”
Badges for Cinepocalypse are on sale now, at a special reduced holiday rate for $100 for the full festival week or $75 for the weekend. Compared to other film festivals of its caliber, it’s honestly a good deal, and you can get passes at this link. Submissions are also now open via FilmFreeway.
