Clark Gregg says Captain Marvel has more than one origin story, hint hint
We’ve learned a few things about the upcoming Captain Marvel film starring Brie Larson, from the cast to the characters to some elements of the plot. And while we knew the period piece (it’s set in the archaic time of the 1990s) was going to deliver an origin story for the titular hero, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Clark Gregg says there’ll be more than one—specifically, his own.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the man who has played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson on the big and small screen for 10 years reveals that the film’s plot will also detail the beginning of Coulson’s time at the secretive government organization. “He’s a bit of a new guy in S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Gregg explains, perhaps happy that he can once more appear in an MCU film without all the Avengers staring at him and saying, “You’re alive? The fuck?” His character will be seen roughly a decade before his first appearance in Iron Man.
“He’s a lot younger,” Gregg continues. “It’s the earliest we will have seen him, so when he says, ‘This isn’t my first rodeo, Mr. Stark’ in Iron Man, this is maybe the rodeo he’s talking about.” Given that the film follows the plight of the planet when it’s caught in a galactic battle between two alien races, “rodeo” seems like too minor of a word to describe it. Of course, none of that appears to be as exciting for Gregg as the fact that the ’90s-set film will also have a very ’90s soundtrack:
I had a feeling that the soundtrack would be as good as it seems like it’s gonna be. That was just a bonus. The ’90s are still pretty much un-mined—definitely the ’90s songs I was listening to and was hearing people listen to…got me excited about a ’90s soundtrack.
Go ahead and place your bets on which songs he was listening to. We’re guessing a lot of Atari Teenage Riot, with maybe a little Shudder To Think thrown in for good measure. Now that would be a soundtrack.
