Clea DuVall’s directorial debut will be a partial But I’m A Cheerleader reunion
Clea DuVall is set to make her directorial debut, and all we really know about the feature film—other than the fact that it will indeed be directed, written, and will star DuVall—is that its cast is stacked. DuVall is bringing in Cobie Smulders, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, Natasha Lyonne, Vincent Piazza, Ben Schwartz, and Alia Shawkat for her mysterious new project, which begs the question: Is this a But I’m A Cheerleader sequel?
Lyonne and DuVall, who starred as young lovers who meet at a gay conversion therapy camp in Jamie Babbit’s 1999 lesbian cult comedy, are already set to reunite in Babbit’s upcoming Addicted To Fresno. So there’s already one But I’m A Cheerleader reunion on the horizon. But DuVall’s untitled project also includes Lynskey, who was part of the supporting cast of But I’m A Cheerleader.
A But I’m A Cheerleader sequel helmed by DuVall herself is probably a pipe dream, though, especially since neither Babbit nor Cheerleader writer Brian Wayne Peterson are attached in any way. But until any plot details of DuVall’s script are released, we can dream. Just imagine: Lyonne and DuVall’s Megan and Graham, no longer teenage gal pals, but rather married adults living in Park Slope with babies and pets and…okay, yes, we’re getting our hopes way too high.
In addition to But I’m A Cheerleader, DuVall’s film credits include Argo and The Grudge. She’s also nearly ubiquitous on television, appearing on Carnivàle, Heroes, American Horror Story, The Newsroom, and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.
