It happened 12 years after his death, but Kurt Cobain is finally bigger than Elvis. According to Forbes, the Nirvana frontman earned $50 million in the past year, topping the magazine's list of top-earning dead celebrities for the first time. Elvis Presley's estate grossed $42 milion in the same period, down from $45 million in 2005. Rounding out the top five are Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, John Lennon and Albert Einstein.
Cobain's post-mortem earning power soared after widow Courtney Love sold a 25 percent stake in Nirvana's song catalog to Primary Wave, a New York publishing company. Teenage angst really does pay off well, even when you're bored and dead.
