Colbert recaps the subtle Trump disses at Bush’s funeral
It’s no secret that Donald Trump is despised by nearly everyone in Washington. So, when all the living presidents, their wives, and every elder statesmen in the capitol gathered this week for George H.W. Bush’s funeral, it was assumed there was going to be a reasonable amount of shade being thrown around, even though the Bush family promised Trump that that wouldn’t be the case. Last night on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert recapped just how much Trump shit-talking people managed to fit into their celebration of Bush’s legacy.
“As soon as you start praising someone’s honesty, you’re automatically throwing shade at Donald Trump,” Colbert says after playing clips from the funeral in which eulogizers also praise former President Bush’s kindness, humility, and reputation for being a gentlemanly politician. It was essentially a shortlist of qualities no one would ever think of applying to the current president.
It’s not exactly clear if Trump absorbed any of these remarks as insults. He’s not the most self-aware septuagenarian and, to be honest, he looked a bit bored sitting in the audience. One would think he’d at least pick up on the body language of the Obamas and Clintons sitting next to him, all of whom where sitting stone-faced and silent. As Colbert says, “Donald Trump is the only person in the world who can bring down a funeral.”
