The first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s big-screen adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., like the classic TV show it’s based on, serves up an ample helping of vintage spycraft. Set in 1963, the shoulders are broad, the parties are mod, and every spy has a perfectly dimpled chin.
The trailer opens by pitting Cold War spies Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) against one another. Once their rivalry is established, the operatives are forced to work together against a common enemy. The pair seem to have little interest in partnering up, but it comes as little surprise that Solo’s rakish charms and Kuryakin’s sober physicality combine to form U.N.C.L.E.’s most effective international team.
Ritchie successfully paired Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as tempestuous allies in his Sherlock Holmes movies, and U.N.C.L.E. looks to be aiming for similar action-comedy fare. Sit through the whole thing and you’ll also catch U.N.C.L.E. boss Mr. Waverly, played by Hugh Grant (who may be the only person using his native accent here).
