Cole Sprouse says Riverdale season 2 will be even more over the top

Having demonstrated just how well a “sexy Archie” show can work with its first season, The CW’s Riverdale is about to get even stranger. That’s according to Cole Sprouse, who plays sexy, angsty Jughead. The actor tells TV Line that season two, which was ordered just weeks after the series premiere, is going to be more over the top than the first, syrup-laden outing. Sprouse promises the show will steer into its neo-noir sensibilities, one saturated shot at a time:

“I think the whole show is going to be getting darker and stranger. We’re going to be leaning into a lot of those qualities that a lot of people ended up loving in the first couple of episodes—this heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy, but it’s taken very seriously.”

When we last saw Jughead, he was delving further into his father FP’s (Skeet Ulrich) life, while Archie (KJ Apa) was trying to keep his father (Luke Perry) from losing his. Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previously teased that the sophomore season will see Archie growing up, presumably following this tragedy, and that the small town will be seized by some great conflict.
