Colin Jost hopes you’ll like him more on Weekend Update next year
Last season, Colin Jost’s debut as the new Weekend Update co-anchor on Saturday Night Live was met with some criticism—surprising, seeing as SNL viewers are generally a patient sort, happy just to unwind from the work week with a laugh or two. But even Jost knows that not everyone loved him the way they did his predecessors, after they’d spent several years hating those predecessors for not being the Update anchor they watched in high school. “I don’t feel like what I’ve done so far is a full realization of who I am,” Jost says in a new interview with the New York Post. “There’s a lot to figure out in the beginning, and your personality starts coming out the more you do it.”
Jost says that next season—where he’ll be more accustomed to the Update desk, his other role as co-head writer, and all those new cast members he quickly had to figure out how to write for—“viewers will see more of who he really is.” Specifically, Jost says he hopes to do more stuff like “Breaking Nudes,” citing the non-sequitur clip of breakdancing naked men as an example of how he likes to “try one of the dumbest things I could do” and have Cecily Strong “stare me down, like, ‘What’s wrong with you?’” So hopefully, viewers will warm to Jost before he tries something really dumb just to impress them. Don’t jump off the roof into the pool, Colin! You’ll break every dang bone in your body!
