Colin Trevorrow says the petition for George Lucas to direct Star Wars: Episode IX is “funny”

One of the most wonderful things about the internet is that you can find all sorts of people on it. Sure, a lot of them are just looking for weird porn, but the ones who aren’t are just as fascinating. Case in point: More than 21,300 people have signed an online petition asking Disney to let George Lucas come back and direct Star Wars: Episode IX (the one after the next one, if you’re not big on counting), which we reported on a few days ago. Who are these people? Did they not see the prequels? Do they just want to watch the world burn? Whatever the answer, it’s hard to deny that from a purely sociological view, these people are truly fascinating.

Now, word of that petition has reached Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow, the guy who is actually directing Episode IX, and—surprisingly—he was not deeply offended by it. In fact, Trevorrow thinks the whole thing is “funny,” but not because of how patently ridiculous it is. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Trevorrow says he first heard about the petition on a day when he was meeting with LucasFilm about wanting “to channel the invention” and “raw creativity” that Lucas brought to Star Wars back in the ’70s. He says that he and everyone else working on Star Wars should follow Lucas’ lead and stop “being afraid that we’re going to embarrass ourselves by doing something that might be crazy.”
