Comedy Central is giving David Spade a whole late-night TV show
The comedy world is still very committed to finding a winning televised vehicle for David Spade. And this year, Spade will be getting his own half-hour late night show to follow The Daily Show With Trevor Noah on Comedy Central. There is neither a title nor a solidified premiere date, but thanks to a recent press release from the cable network, we do know that the premise will not be driven by politics. With that bit of reprieve, let’s exhale as a group.
The idea is to mirror some of the success that Spade has cultivated with his popular Instagram account, which recently earned a shout-out on Netflix’s Grace And Frankie. As of now, the format will include a rotating round table of celebrity friends as they provide commentary on the latest pop-culture news, which can surely only yield good things.
In terms of newly developing projects, Spade’s is the only of its kind among a slate of scripted efforts set to premiere on the network. With Broad City coming to an end, the work of some of its alumni can be seen in How To Be A Couple from former writer Naomi Ekperigin and a series based on Samantha Irby’s book of essays Meaty, which will be executive produced by Abbi Jacobson.
Comedy Central also released a first look at the promising new Chicago-bred series South Side, about two friends who find themselves stalled at a local rental retail company after graduating community college. It drops this summer and will feature appearances from Lil Rel Howery, LisaRaye McCoy, and Kel Mitchell.
