Comedy Central may have tried to get Amy Poehler, Louis C.K., and Amy Schumer for The Daily Show
Now that news of Trevor Noah’s ascent to The Daily Show throne has been made official, it’s time to immediately turn our attention to what could have been. According to Grantland editor-in-chief Bill Simmons, Comedy Central pursued three “big-ass names” for the coveted gig before settling on Noah: Amy Poehler, Louis C.K., and Amy Schumer.
Simmons followed his assertion with another tweet in which he said he didn’t think “Poehler or CK was realistic, but had CC caught Schumer a year earlier – very realistic. Now she knows she can make movies.” No word from Poehler or C.K. on any of this speculation, but given that she’s already spent time as a satirical news show correspondent and he dedicated a three episode arc of Louie to not inheriting the Late Show from David Letterman, Simmons’ rationale is probably spot on. As for Schumer, she does indeed make movies and actually seems pretty excited about the Noah hire. However green the grass she’s standing on, the job belongs to him. Perhaps Simmons had the idiom in mind with his “0 for 3” baseball comment. Or maybe he just really likes splicing sports and pop culture—it’s kind of his thing. Who knows.
