Congratulations, America, you’re getting two more Tyler Perry movies
Tyler Perry is set to continue his reign as Madea, the Ernest P. Worrell of African American-focused, faith-adjacent entertainment. Hot off strong box-office returns for Boo! A Madea Halloween, Lionsgate has greenlit two more Perry films, including one centered on his trash-talking granny character, who’s now blowing through holidays at a frightening speed.
Boo! has made $56.4 million at the box office, more than doubling its slim $20 million budget. Given that Lionsgate is currently scrabbling for franchises in a post-Hunger Games world, it’s not surprising that the studio would extend the Perry brand. CEO John Feltheimer made the announcement while talking to analysts about the company’s earnings today, adding that the studio’s also hoping to bulk itself up with a new My Little Pony film, as well as its ongoing plans to adapt Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle.
