Costume designers love the lavish looks of La La Land and Jackie

Jackie’s pink suit and gorgeous gowns and the primary-colored clothes of La La Land seem to have impressed the Costume Designers Guild. The designers divide up their awards into different categories, so while these two will likely go head-to-head at the Oscars, here they are nominated in the Excellence in Contemporary Film and Excellence in Period Film categories, respectively. La La Land is joined by Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Captain Fantastic, Lion, and Nocturnal Animals. That last one is a Tom Ford project—did you really think it wouldn’t be represented? Meanwhile, in the period race, Jackie is going up against The Dressmaker, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hail, Caesar!, and Hidden Figures.

Fantasy films are also their own separate category, a group that contains one of the most intriguing nods for the garments of the stop-motion puppets from Kubo And The Two Strings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this marks the first time an animated film has been recognized in this fashion by the guild. Meanwhile, when it comes to television, we learn that Westworld counts as a period series, which makes sense if you only judge it based on half the show. You can see the full list of nominations over at THR.
