Crack the formula for an ’80s drug drama with the Snowfall premiere

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Wednesday, July 5. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Snowfall (FX, 10 p.m.): It’s time to get high on drugs—or at least a retelling of the story behind one of the most addictive substances in recent history. Set in 1983 Los Angeles, Snowfall aims to make a dramatic thriller series out of the rise of crack cocaine and its impact on American culture. Check out our pre-air assessment, then tune in for weekly reviews from Kyle Fowle.

Regular coverage

Kingdom (Audience, 8 p.m.)
Broadchurch (BBC America, 10 p.m.)

Wild card

American Mary (Chiller, 4 p.m.): If you have yet to see this comically over-the-top exercise in body horror, you’re depriving yourself of an excellent scenery-chewing performance by Katharine Isabelle as a med student who starts moonlighting as an extreme body-modification surgeon in the basement of a strip club in order to solve her financial problems. Yes, you read that right, and yes, it’s a delight, thanks to Isabelle and writer-directors the Soska sisters, who are responsible for a very silly script but who direct it like “bombastic” is going out of style and they’ve stockpiled the nation’s supply for just this occasion.
