Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan died in a "tragic accident," coroner reveals

At the beginning of this year we reported on the death of Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan, 46, of causes then unknown. Now, following an inquest from a West London coroner’s court, the results from the initial portmortem have been confirmed, with no evidence of foul play or intent to self-harm.

According to The Guardian, the inquest results show the singer accidentally drowned as a result of alcohol intoxication. O’Riordan was found unresponsive in the bathtub of a Hilton hotel in London on January 15 around 9 a.m., with a blood alcohol level that was more than four times the legal limit for driving. Medications in her system were found to be at therapeutic levels, which, along with the lack of note, led police to determine there was nothing suspicious about her death. “There’s no evidence that this was anything other than an accident,” stated coroner Dr. Shirley Radcliffe.

The inquest, which took place on what would have been O’Riordan’s 47th birthday, matched accounts saying that she had been drinking heavily the night before. O’Riordan’s bandmates released a statement thanking fans worldwide for the outpouring of support in the wake of the singer’s death. “We continue to struggle to come to terms with what happened,” they said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dolores’ children and her family and our thoughts are with them today. Dolores will live on eternally in her music.”
