Crazy Ex-Girlfriend takes 20 mg of La La Land in this exclusive clip from tonight’s episode
“You have toughed it own for a long time on your own here,” Jay Hayden’s Dr. Shin (a.k.a. Dr. Daaaaamn) says to Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) near the end of last week’s excellent Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Then he rips a page from his prescription pad and adds, “And you don’t have to.” That’s the first major step in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s latest effort in the arena of de-stigmatizing things that shouldn’t be a stigmatized, a push that continues with this week’s big musical number.
“Antidepressants Are So Not A Big Deal” (written as always by Bloom, Jack Dolgen, and Adam Schlesinger) sees Dr. Akopian (Michael Hyatt) taking Rebecca on a stroll through the all-singing, all-dancing, all-medicated streets of West Covina, opening her eyes to the fact that plenty of people get a little extra help from one of several antidepressants. The number references La La Land (“But there’s not a car to dance on in sight,” choreographer Kathryn M. Burns told The A.V. Club), using the language of tap, jazz, and classic movie musicals to reinforce that, as Burns puts it, “We’re all on antidepressants, it’s not a big deal, and if we’re all on antidepressants, then we’re joyfully dancing in the streets.”
Watch it above, keep your eyes peeled for a couple recurring characters in the ensemble, and look for our recap of the episode, “I Have To Get Out,” tonight.
