Creed and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler—not to be confused with his search engine-minded doppelganger, Ryan Googler—is making his first major move into TV. Coogler is teaming up with Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton, for a series built along lines similar to Cretton’s Brie Larson-starring film about the staff of a group home for troubled teens.
Working with poet Chinaka Hodge, the pair have put together a treatment for Minors, which is being sold as a mix between Orange Is The New Black and the fourth season of The Wire, in what might be the most depressing elevator pitch since Elisha Otis first made them a possibility. Tapping into their shared experience working with underprivileged youth—Coogler has worked for years as a counselor for kids in San Francisco’s Juvenile Hall—the trio plan to tell a story tracking the effects of the system on the kids caught up in it for an entire year.
According to Vulture, nobody’s bit so far, but it’s likely that Coogler’s name—which carries both the box office bona fides of Creed, and the future weight of a Marvel superhero movie—will eventually lure somebody in, despite the weighty subject matter.
