Fans of scary movies were elated back when it was first revealed that horror auteur Guillermo del Toro would be returning to his roots with Crimson Peak, a “haunted house” film starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam. Now, the teaser trailer for the film has been released, and it looks… exactly how you would expect a haunted house movie to look, which is a little underwhelming. You’ve got lots of pretty costumes, professional handsome man Hiddleston, and what looks like a real scenery-chewing performance from Chastain, herself no stranger to del Toro-related horror projects. But when it gets to the spooky elements, the movie seems to enter some extremely well-trod territory. (Especially once it starts revealing CGI boogeymen that wouldn’t look out of place in an episode of Supernatural.) Here’s hoping the trailer simply isn’t doing justice to the director’s vision, and that Crimson Peak ends up scaring us silly.
