Critics Choice Awards finally stop waffling and choose 12 Years A Slave

Last night was the annual Critics Choice Awards, the one time a year when film critics are forced to abandon all their diplomatic vacillating about movies (“They’re all great!”) and finally make a choice. Variety notes that the ceremony had “an impressive turnout” from the likes of Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock, considering most of them had been “awake since before dawn” for Oscar nominations, and other chores that make celebrities the backbone of this country.  But as a reward for enduring a tough day of being honored yet still finding the energy to attend a lavish ceremony at night, some of them went home with new trophies, and the feeling that sometimes, being famous was worth it.

12 Years A Slave, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alfonso Cuarón, and Spike Jonze all continued their Golden Globes winning streaks. Gravity racked up nearly all the technical awards to be the night’s biggest winner, technically. Lupita Nyong’o finally got to win a Best Supporting Actress nod. The Broadcast Film Critics Association’s inclusion of comedy and action movie categories also allowed it to shower praise on American Hustle, Lone Survivor, and even Mark Wahlberg, who, we’ll just assume, reminded any of his fellow actors who might have complained about having been “awake since before dawn” that they get to go home at the end of the day and order fucking chicken or your steak or whatever the fuck it is.
