Fosse/Verdon (FX, 10 p.m., series premiere): If you’re sitting there, wondering what the heck a Fosse-slash-Verdon is, here’s your answer. It’s these two:
FX’s new limited series from Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) and Thomas Kail (the director of Hamilton), among others, follows the complex relationship between Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. The former was a director and choreographer who picked up an Oscar for Cabaret and had an incalculable impact on the world of dance; the latter, a triple-threat (an actor-singer-dancer) who picked up four Tonys in her time treading the boards. They fell in love. That’s the story, but it’s all a lot more complicated than that, particularly when it comes to the role Verdon played in the creation of Fosse’s work and legacy. All that, and they dance.
If you’re a person who loves musical theater, this isn’t a series we need to sell you on. You’ve probably already set your DVR and cleared your schedule. But if you’re not, don’t let the jazz hands dissuade you—this thing stars Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell, to say nothing of Aya Cash, Paul Reiser, Norbert Leo Butz, Evan Handler, The Americans’ Susan Misner, Nate Corddry, the list goes on.
