Cute kids + outdated technology = you are old

This video is in French, but some sentiments are universal, such as “kids these days!” Montreal journalist Jean-Christophe Laurence gave a bunch of school kids some outdated tech from the ’80s and ’90s and asked them what it was, and the results will make you feel ooooooold. To the kids’ credit, they generally land in the ballpark when guessing the items’ use, though usually somewhere way out in left field: a GameBoy is “a video game,” a 45 is “an old CD” (one kid even figures out how to scratch with it!), and after initially thinking an 8-track player is a bomb, the group actually figures out how to jam a cassette in the thing. The item that gives them the most trouble seems to be a 3.5-inch diskette, which is suggested to be a camera, a credit card, and some sort of iPod peripheral.

To be fair to these kids, when I was in college in 2003 I encountered an old 8-inch floppy for the first time and it blew my mind. (Yeah, yeah, the jokes write themselves.) There’s really no reason these kids should know what this stuff is, so I can’t really work up any “get off my lawn” rage. Just enjoy the sight of them banging this stuff together in an attempt to wring some meaning out of it all.
