Out of all the members of the upcoming Justice League, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg has been the most out-of-focus when it comes to Warner Bros.’ big promotional push. That’s not wholly surprising; neither Fisher nor the character are especially big names (especially not when stacked up against Ben Affleck or Wonder Woman), and unlike, say, Aquaman, Cyborg doesn’t have his own movie coming out soon to build up hype around.
But that doesn’t mean poor old Vic Stone is being completely ignored as the film moves closer to completion. According to a new IGN interview with co-star Joe Morton—who plays Silas Stone, the scientist who transformed his son into the metallic superhero—Cyborg has been a big part of the reshoots being done by the film’s new director, Joss Whedon, who took over the project after Zack Snyder stepped away to spend more time with his family in the wake of his daughter’s death. According to Morton—who also riffs on the similarities between his role in Justice League and his famous performance as cybernetics enthusiast Miles Dyson in Terminator 2—a number of Whedon’s reshoots have been about lightening the movie’s tone, especially in regards to the Cyborg character.
“I know that with Ray, the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character,” Morton said. “I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don’t know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated in terms of the reshoots but that’s what I heard.” It’s not clear what proportion of Whedon’s reshoots were specifically about adding some levity to Cyborg, or if the entire film is getting a general lightening up from the darker tone of the franchise’s earlier installments in the aftermath of Wonder Woman’s success.
