Cyndi Lauper is making a Working Girl musical

Cyndi Lauper jumped into the world of Broadway musicals a few years ago with the critically acclaimed Kinky Boots, becoming the first solo woman to win the Tony for Best Score along the way, and now she’s found her next big musical project. According to The New York Times, Lauper will be writing the music and lyrics for a Broadway show based on the 1988 film Working Girl, which starred Melanie Griffith as a woman fighting for the respect of her male peers at a big-time investment bank. New Girl writer Kim Rosenstock is handling the book (which covers all of the stuff that isn’t singing, for anyone who doesn’t follow musicals), and her first draft is expected to be done soon. Variety notes that Carly Simon’s music was a big part of the original movie, but there’s “no word” on if she’ll be involved with this project at all.

Now, if the idea of a Working Girl musical sounds familiar, it could be because Bob’s Burgers used that as a plot point back in 2014. That production had to be combined with a competing performance of a Die Hard musical, but it remains to be seen if something similar will happen here. (For the record, Carly Simon did show up that time.)
