Cyndi Lauper to appear on tonight's Raw SuperShow, making possibility of rock 'n' wrestling connection highest since the mid-1980s
In 1985, two talented young women who inspired a generation to sing and dance in thrift-shop outfits made a splash on the pop charts and proceeded to make their first steps at enlarging their empires to take in all of mass entertainment. While Madonna spent the year starring in a hit movie (Desperately Seeking Susan), hosting SNL, and marrying Sean Penn, Cyndi Lauper took the more esoteric route of serving as front woman for the brief cross-promotion of MTV and professional wrestling, and co-starring with Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Classy Freddie Blassie in a two-part video for her theme song for The Goonies. Fault her for her career acumen if you like, but respect the fact that the heart wants what it wants. Tonight, as was first announced over the weekend via Twitter, Lauper will be returning to the arena to make a guest appearance on Raw SuperShow. Legendary ring announcer Howard Finkel was moved to chime in that Lauper “was a major part of the Rock and Wrestling Connection back in the day,” referencing the ’80s partnership between the then-WWF and the music industry. This news is brought as a public service for anyone who’d like to feel nostalgic for the ’80s but found that watching Tom Cruise dab on black nail polish and bellow “Pour Some Sugar On Me” didn’t get the job done.
