Actress and activist Cynthia Nixon announced her candidacy for Governor of the State of New York today, which, according to our notes, is … sooooo Miranda. (A punk phase that lasted throughout Sex And The City’s original TV run prevents us from commenting further on that front.) She did so in a video released on her Twitter account and subsequently uploaded to YouTube, in which Nixon decries growing economic inequality and promises to fight for all the citizens of New York, ending on the kind of warm, yet conspiratorial look straight into the camera that you can only get from someone who’s three-quarters of their way to an EGOT.
Nixon, who is 51, has never held public office before—not that that really matters in a post-Trump world. She does have an extensive history of activism as a civilian, campaigning in support of gay marriage, Planned Parenthood, and increasing funding for New York City’s public schools as well as on behalf of Barack Obama, Bill de Blasio, and Al Franken’s re-election campaigns. (Can’t win ‘em all, we guess.) If elected, Nixon would be the state’s first female governor, as well as its first LGBTQ governor, according to the New York Times. (Nixon, who describes her sexuality as fluid, is married to a woman.) Now also seems as good of a time as any to point out that she was quite good as Emily Dickinson in Terence Davies’ A Quiet Passion.
Nixon will go up against current governor Andrew M. Cuomo in this year’s state Democratic primary, set to take place on September 13.
