Documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker hasn’t done a proper concert film since 2000’s Down From The Mountain, so it’s a quite a coup on their part that The National just nabbed him to direct a live webcast of their May 15 show at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music. Pitchfork reports that Pennebaker—the director behind Bob Dylan’s Don’t Look Back, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, and Monterey Pop—will film the concert for streaming on YouTube with the help of his wife and frequent collaborator Chris Hegedus. The National are staging the show as a benefit for the Red Hot Organization, which it previously raised funds for with its Dark Was The Night compilation—and given the promised inclusion of “special guests,” it seems a safe bet that some of the featured bands from that disc will drop by. This will be Pennebaker’s first-ever attempt at directing a live broadcast, which just makes all you other 84-year-olds reading this site look like a bunch of lazy motherfuckers.
