Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts are making a Hamlet retelling called Ophelia
Though she didn’t get cast as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley is making up for it by signing on to play a similarly iconic character in Ophelia, a YA-friendly retelling of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The movie will be an adaptation of Lisa Klein’s 2006 book of the same name, and it’ll be directed by The Waiting City’s Claire McCarthy. While Hamlet centers on the eponymous prince plotting revenge against his uncle for killing his dad and seizing control of Denmark, Ophelia tells the story from the perspective of the girl who falls in love with Hamlet. This all comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that Klein’s book “takes a different road” than the original play, and that it features “a secret wedding, characters who survive, and a semi-happy ending.” Ridley will be playing Ophelia, and she’ll be appearing alongside Naomi Watts (as Hamlet’s mother). No other casting information has been announced yet.
