Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen try to lose their virginity in the Very Good Girls trailer

Films about teenage boys losing their virginity are often raunchy comedies, full of booze, vulgarity, and defiled baked goods. On the rare occasions that filmmakers turn their attention to young women in the same situation, the results tend more toward the weepy and dramatic. Hence this trailer for Very Good Girls, starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen as best friends vowing to lose their virginity before going off to college.

The trailer manages to hit all of the tropes you’d expect from a film like this: a love triangle between the two girls and a young photographer from the “It’s not stalking if his bangs are really nice” school of brooding indie romance heroes; an adult cast full of actors like Richard Dreyfuss and Ellen Barkin doing their best to exude credibility; and deep, philosophical dialogue like “I’m afraid of dying,” “I’m afraid of not doing anything while I’m still here.”

The film—the directorial debut of Naomi Foner, screenwriter of Bee Season and 1988’s Running On Empty—premiered last year at Sundance, and arrives in theaters on July 25.
