Daniel Brühl tracks a 19th-century serial killer in The Alienist trailer

The beginning of the first trailer for The Alienist helpfully defines the eponymous term: Essentially, it’s an old-fashioned word for a mental health professional. Based on the novel by Caleb Carr, the upcoming TNT show features Daniel Brühl as Laszlo Kreizler, who puts his knowledge of the human psyche to use in the search for a horrifying serial killer in 19th-century New York. Kreizler works alongside a journalist (Luke Evans) and a secretary (Dakota Fanning) in Teddy Roosevelt’s police department. (Yes, Teddy shows up too.) The artfully photographed and movie star-laden series is a high profile one for the network, which is apparently looking to stake its place in the crowded prestige television marketplace. The Alienist is executive produced by True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga, and has yet to set a premiere date.
