David Bowie posthumously tops the Billboard charts with Blackstar
After David Bowie’s death, there was an outpouring of love and support for the iconic musician that will presumably continue until we’ve all ascended to whatever plane of reality he came from. Unsurprisingly, that love has translated into a ton of album sales, not only for Bowie’s recently released Blackstar, but also nine of his other albums. According to Billboard, Blackstar has debuted at No. 1 (making it Bowie’s first ever No. 1 album on the Billboard charts), Best Of Bowie re-entered the charts at No. 4, and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars came in at No. 21. Seven other Bowie albums also cracked Billboard’s Top 200.
Billboard notes that this makes Bowie one of only a few artists to have two albums in the Billboard top four at the same time. (Adele was the last person to pull it off, back in 2012 when she won a bunch of Grammys.) Blackstar is also the first posthumous album to hit No. 1 since Michael Jackson’s This Is It in 2009. On the off chance you’re one of the few people who hasn’t bought Blackstar yet, the hauntingly poignant video for “Lazarus” is below.
