David Bowie wins five posthumous Grammys, his first for music

Adele wasn’t the only big winner at “the biggest night in music” on Sunday—the late David Bowie’s Blackstar racked up five Grammys wins. Bowie’s final album, which proved to be as innovative as any of the works before it, received four awards during the pre-show: Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-classical, and Best Recording Package. Doug Jones shared a sweet tweet after learning about his late father’s awards show victories.

During the televised show, which featured a great Prince tribute (finally) and a phenomenal Beyoncé performance, ”Blackstar” won Best Rock Song. The posthumous accolades for the album weren’t much of a surprise—but the fact that they were Bowie’s first Grammys for music is. Before Blackstar’s five-Grammy streak, Bowie nabbed a Best Video, Short Form Grammy in 1985 for Jazzin’ For Blue Jean, and he also earned a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
