David Dastmalchian to play very iconic DC villain Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn's Suicide Squad
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad just landed another heavy hitter to fight alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Idris Elba’s undisclosed new character (who is not Deadshot), with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Ant-Man’s David Dastmalchian (he also played the “Rachel Dawes” cop in The Dark Knight) has joined the cast as Abner Krill—a.k.a. Polka-Dot Man, the polka-dot prince of crime! THR seems to believe that he’s a relatively obscure character, possibly because he “has appeared less than a dozen times” in the comics since his first appearance in the ‘60s, but obviously true nerds know all about Polka-Dot Man and his affinity for, you know, colored circles and stuff.
Alright, we’ll admit that this is a much more obscure pick for the team than Captain Boomerang or Killer Croc, but random idiots that nobody cares about is absolutely in keeping with the spirit of what the Suicide Squad has always been in the comics and the sort of weirdo tone that Gunn tends to bring to his superhero movies. He’ll be writing and directing this one, a major coup for the DC universe before Marvel welcomed him back for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, and unless Dastmalchian’s character wears all black and murders people with dots, it looks like Gunn will be taking this in a sillier direction than David Ayer did with the first movie. Speaking of, this is supposedly not a sequel but a “new take” on the idea of a super-prison putting bombs in the necks of inmates and forcing them to take on seemingly unwinnable missions… a “suicide squad,” if you will.
Along with Polka-Dot Man, The Suicide Squad will feature Ratcatcher, Peacemaker, King Shark, and the aforementioned trio of actual famous people/characters. (Actually, King Shark is cool. He doesn’t deserve to be dismissed so readily.)
